“My business model crystallized when I recalled the Chinese proverb that goes something like this: “Teach me and I’ll forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I’ll understand.” I’ve dedicated many years of entrepreneurship to the “show me” stage. Writing a book would have reverted to a “teach me” stage, but launching ActSeed will be stepping forward into the most valuable arena for entrepreneurship: “involve me.Link to full story…

”The accepted mythology of entrepreneurship goes something like this: An average guy or gal has a flash of inspiration, funds a startup with credit cards, and eventually achieves runaway financial success. Sound familiar? We’re not going to deny the importance of the “Eureka!” moment. But it’s not the only—or even the most successful—way to start a new business…   The process of coming up with a great idea for a new business need not be shrouded in mystery. Serial entrepreneurs, in particular, tend to follow a well-thought-out, disciplined process.”  Link to full story…

ActSeed is a synthesis of my 20+ years creating, working for and working with emerging businesses. What I’ve discovered is that I have a lot more to learn yet enough experience to share. When designing ActSeed, my primary goal was to help people in the most nascent stages of business creation and assure they have a chance to start off with discipline and a solid plan of attack. As I like to say, no one sets out to fail, but many sure seem to try “taking the certainty out of success”. One of my favorite sayings is, “Vision without execution is nothing”. This doesn’t mean vision counts for nothing; it means you must have the right people, plan, execution and intensity to transform the vision into value and wealth.

I’ve founded four companies. Three are still operational. I’ve bootstrapped two companies, raised “friends & family”, angel, seed, VC and corporate funding. My fund-raising “battle scars” include pitches to over 60 VCs / angels / corporations from Sand Hill Road to Westport, Connecticut – not a world record, but a reasonable start.

My experience includes serving as CEO, COO, consultant, coach, advisor or director to almost 30 companies, from idea-stage to publicly-traded. Within these roles, I have led planning, budgeting, forecasting, sales, product development, marketing, customer support, recruiting, governance, operations, and have been accountable for overall P&L performance.

As an angel investor, I know what it feels like to put my own money on the line and what it’s like to do a post-mortem on a deal that didn’t make it in spite of thorough due diligence.

I am the son of two hard working (and now retired) teachers. Midwesterner by birth and Southerner through adolescence, I have been fortunate to experience facets of business that are often missed or underappreciated by those who have only experienced “big city” business.  While I was professionally groomed in New York City and Silicon Valley, my first business launched in Jacksonville, Alabama, and I spent many humid summer days learning the value of “working hard and working smart” in iron foundries and on construction sites. My point is that it’s valuable to have learned much of my trade in the epicenters of finance and venture capital, but it’s invaluable to directly appreciate and respect where a great deal of the innovation and hard work originates – with the millions of people who aren’t trying to conquer world markets, but are trying to establish a responsibly-managed small business that will employ a few people, make a reasonable profit, pay taxes on time and be a contributor to the community and economy.

In summary, I know just enough to maybe be dangerous. I’ve “walked in the shoes” of every type of person I hope joins ActSeed. If you’re here, it means to me that you are serious about new business creation, which also means I believe in you. My goal is to create a trusted marketplace for the seed-stage ecosystem by leveraging my experience and network while aggregating the experience and contributions of others who are also serious about building successful, sustainable businesses.

Because I don’t have all the answers, I want to build a community that does.

I am committed to the success of ActSeed’s modern-era marketplace for new business and job creation. In ancient times the marketplace was a physical environment for the exchange of goods, services, and money. But more importantly it was a forum for the exchange of new ideas, technology, and global culture.

During my 20+ year career in Big 4 consulting and industry I’ve led many transformation and technology programs for emerging and global companies, always with a personal interest in innovating and adapting leading practice concepts and technology to new situations. ActSeed is a natural extension of what I’ve learned and pursued throughout my career.

Our design for ActSeed puts the entrepreneur in the center of the marketplace – surrounded by investors, talent, professional and vendor services, and education non/profit support. And in the spirit of the ancient marketplace we’ve leveraged new technology concepts to enable efficient interaction, sharing of ideas, personal control over information, and access to valuable, leading practice content. We believe that this new marketplace will benefit new as well as experienced entrepreneurs.

We’ve built the marketplace. Now we ask you to become involved, contribute, and help build a new, dynamic on-line community.
